HOW IT IS DONE
True lecanomancy involves the behavior of oil on the surface of the water, so you need a minimum of two things—a bowl or basin filled with water, and oil to pour into it. Over and above that, from what I gather, there are several different ways of performing lecanomancy:
- A bowl or basin of water and some oil on hand to pour into it.
- A bowl or basin of water, some oil, and a fistful of gems or pebbles.
- A clear glass bowl or basin of water, some oil, and a divinatory chart for placing under the basin
- The inner rim of the basin is inscribed with symbols, and a ring on a thread or hair is suspended over the basin, and is observed to see in which direction the ring swings. This is a combination of lecanomancy and dactylomancy, or is ring divination. (In the absence of a ring on a thread, I see no reason why a pendulum wouldn’t do the trick equally-well).
- A bowl of water and an indirect light source—water scrying.
I will cover the first four of these in this lesson, as they are lecanomancy in the truest sense of the word. The fifth one is water-scrying, which I consider to be a separate subject, and will deal-with in another lesson for another day. With the glossary of suggested meanings in hand, we can proceed to a run-down of the various forms of lecanomancy, starting with:

BASIC LECANOMANCY NUMBER ONE
- Calm your mind, center yourself, and ask whatever Spirits or Higher Power(s) you normally appeal to for Their guidance and help with this divination session. Lecanomancy is a rather free-form and organic divination method, so asking for assistance in this is an extra-good idea. A relaxed, open, non-judgmental frame of mind probably also helps with this sort of divination.
- Formulate a question in your mind. This can be an either/or, success/failure sort of question, or a ‘show me the atmosphere surrounding (fill in the blank with the individual or group of your choice) in the matter of (fill in the blank with the issue, question or problem you’re concerned about).’
- Pour the oil into the center of the bowl/basin of water. It needn’t be much; two to three tablespoons or 50 ml should be plenty. Depending on the size of your container and your own inclination, you may want to eyeball this, intuiting when you’ve poured enough oil into the vessel. Do not use a completely clear oil–it should have at least a little color to it, in order to make the oil and its movements more visible. Try pouring the oil with your less-dominant hand, as that is more connected to your subconscious mind.
- Note two things: what form does the oil take just after you’ve finished pouring? Give it a minute or two, or three, observing how the oil changes, or doesn’t. What shape did the oil take when you first poured it? What did it transform into? Was the oil the same in both instances? If the result was the former, that can be taken as a ‘this is how the situation starts out, this is what it will change into’ sort of answer. If the latter, then that can be taken as a fairly-definitive statement of ‘this is what the situation is, period, paragraph, it’s not going to change.’ Keep your question in mind as you observe the oil’s movements on the water’s surface, for your interpretation will and should be tailored to the specific question asked.
