MEANINGS OF THE CARDS
Heat-Image: Phoenix on its own funeral pyre. Upright Meanings: Evolution-a Friend-Change. Reversed Meanings: Instability-an Enemy-Regression. Additional suggested meanings: self-immolation, suicide, dying in one sense to be reborn in another, much heat but no light shed on an issue, the seed of the new contained within the destruction of the old, hostility, heated words, violence, helping to gather the wood for one’s own funeral pyre.
Cold-Image: Polar Bear in the frozen north. Upright Meanings: Reserve-Rest-Bravery. Reversed Meanings: Stubbornness-Idleness-Coldness. Additional suggested meanings: frozen in place, watch-and-wait, keeping one’s powder dry, scarcity of resources, living off one’s own fat, or whatever resources one has already accumulated, having to go without for a time, persistence in the hope a better day will come, sheltering-in-place, remaining alert for danger—or opportunity, calculated risk.
Moisture-Image: a Toad/Frog in the rain, or by a pond. Upright meanings: Uncertainty-a Man or Boy-Haste. Reversed meanings: Reflection-an Old Man-Stability. Additional suggested meanings: relax, know that what is yours will come to you, calmly observing the terrain, conserving one’s strength in the heat of the day, lying-low, retreat, dry humor, not reacting to every provocation, acceptance of one’s situation, lying in wait, confidence, knowing that everything is under control, and going according to plan, no trouble on the horizon, surely nothing unusual is going to happen in the next ten minutes.
Air-Image: an Eagle before the Sun. Upright meanings: A New Start-A New Arrival-A New Idea. Reversed meanings: Indecision-Young People-Delays. Additional suggested meanings: dawn, higher thoughts, flying-high, the lord of all one surveys, seeing things from a high perch or viewpoint, getting the lay of the land, feeling elated, ennobled, elevated. Reversed: crashing back to earth, being confronted with harsh reality, being shot-down, having one’s wings clipped, welcome back to the poor side of town, ‘you’re grounded.’
Fire-Image: a Dragon Setting Fire to Something. Upright meanings: Unity-Strength-Loyalty. Reversed meanings: Rigidity-Tyranny-Anarchy. Suggested additional meanings: destructive anger, someone going off on a rant, someone going on a crime spree, a pyromanic, a take-no-prisoners, kill-them-all-and-let-God-sort-them-out attitude, feeling I’m-mad-as-hell-and-I’m-not-going-to-take-it-anymore, someone whose buttons have been pushed and they’re reacting accordingly, lashing out in blind anger. Reversed: earthquake, either literal or figurative, sacrifice, becoming someone’s dinner, having one’s world turned upside-down.
Water-Image: a Dolphin is Leaping out of the Waves. Upright meanings: Experience-A Woman or Girl-Enjoyment. Reversed meanings: Indulgence-an Old Woman-Wisdom. Additional suggested meanings: striving, play, exercise, happiness, joy, elation, seeking a higher perspective, going with the flow, fitting-in with whatever environment one is in, a deep well of emotion. Reversed: landing on one’s back with the confidence support is there; water as an out-of-control, destructive force, such as a flood, a hurricane, a storm; drowning, either literal or figurative.
