One lesson I quickly learned—the smaller the symbol-system you are working with, the better said symbol-system will work if you keep your questions fairly specific, small, and limited. This could mean doing several shufflings and spreads for different aspects of the same issue. So long as you’re willing to accept that limitation, these cards will work for you.

Another thing I learned to do with these cards is to free-associate the images on the cards. The cards have word meanings on them, and depending on the reading, only one or two of those words may apply to the subject you’re reading about. With a deck this small, though, I think it’s important to take the picture on the card into consideration as well. Feel free to pull that into your interpretation. For example, the Fire card’s stated-meanings are ‘unity-strength-loyalty’ on the upright, and rigidity-tyranny-anarchy on the reverse, but what is the dragon on the card actually doing? It’s burning something down.

So here we could have destructive anger, someone going off on a rant, someone going on a crime spree, a pyromanic, a take-no-prisoners, kill-them-all-and-let-God-sort-them-out attitude, feeling I’m-mad-as-hell-and-I’m-not-going-to-take-it-anymore, someone whose buttons have been pushed and they’re reacting accordingly, lashing out in blind anger. You may find the picture’s implied meaning is what’s really going on, and the words along the perimeter of the card are literally peripheral to the matter.
