EXERCISE
- Try using the Mah Jongg as a one-card oracle-of-the-day for one week. Note which card you pulled for each day, and return to the card at the end of the day. Could you see how the card you chose for each day that week applied to the events of the day?
- Try using the Mah Jongg in a three-card lay-out, either past-present-future, or situation-action called for-result spread. How effective or helpful were the Mah Jongg cards (or tiles, if you’re using them) in such a spread? Was it different than using, say, the Runes or the Ogham cards in a three-card lay-out?
- Try using the Mah Jongg in a five-card lay-out (see one of the following attachments): Five-CardSpreadVersion1 Five-CardSpreadVersion2 Five-CardSpreadVersion3. Did the Mah Jongg ‘work’ in any of these spreads? Was a five-card lay-out more understandable than a three-card lay-out with the Mah Jongg? Would one of the other symbol-set systems we’ve covered work better with a five-card lay-out?
- Either try the traditional thirteen-card mah jongg lay-out illustrated above in a question of your own devising, or try your hand at interpreting the spread featured in the picture below. Of the four types of lay-outs in this exercise, which lay-out do you most-prefer to use with the Mah Jongg?
Bibliography
Mainly what’s out there, that I’ve been able to find, comes from Derek Walters, but for the interested:
Walters, Derek. The Fortune Teller’s Mah Jongg: The Ancient Oracle as a Modern Oracle. New York: Penguin Group, Viking Press, 1994. ISBN: 0-670-85640-1.
This is just the book, but it’s easier to handle and read than the tiny book which comes in the boxed-set.
Walters, Derek. Mah Jongg: The Oracle and the Game. San Diego, California: Thunder Bay Press, Baker & Taylor Publishing Group, 2011. ISBN: 978-1-60710-390-5.
Both of these are available through Amazon.com.

The reason for the reverse direction is because it is the celestial compass. This is always reversed. I’ve had the Derek Walters deck for over a decade so it is nice to read someone else is using them to divine. Hope you are continuing to enjoy!
