Alpha-Numeric Systems
In numerology, each letter of the western alphabet is given a numeric significance. There are two main alpha-numeric charts people who practice numerology follow: the older Chaldean and the newer Pythagorean. I have seen a third, developed by Numerologist Amie Angeli. By far, most numerologists use the Pythagorean alpha-numeric chart, but some numerologists prefer the original Chaldean alpha-numeric chart, as they consider it to give them a more accurate read on a person’s character than the Pythagorean chart. I encourage you to experiment with all three alpha-numeric systems, in order to find the one that strikes you as being the most accurate in terms of describing your subject.
The Pythagorean Chart assigns all the letters of the alphabet, in order, to each of the nine primary numbers, so numbers 1 through 8 will have three letters each and number 9 will have only 2 letters in the western alphabet.
The Chaldeans held the number nine in particular reverence and therefore didn’t use it in their numerological calculations. Another important difference between the two systems is that, when using the Pythagorean system, the full formal name as it is written on the birth certificate is used. In the Chaldean system, the name the person is most commonly known by is used.

Numerologist Amie Angeli takes into account what she perceives to be the most salient energy flow common to how each letter is constructed, when assigning a numerical value to each letter. That having been said, you’ll notice her system has some overlap with the Chaldean system in the alpha-numeric values she assigns to letters. Angeli, however, agrees with the Pythagorean system that it’s preferable to calculate the name number based on the name given at birth, rather than the name used now, as the Chaldean system does. Neither the number 9 nor the number 8 are used in her assignment of alpha-numeric values. She considers the number 9 to carry great burdens (observe how it’s constructed—it looks like a person carrying a heavy load). She considers the number 8 the number of resonance, so it demands a continual in-put of energy, in order to maintain the resonance.
