HOW MY ALETHIOMETER CHART WORKS

  1. The first step is to determine which method you’re going to employ. This chart can be used one of three ways, as I stated earlier; by the employment of a spinning object, spinning surface with pointer, or roulette wheel with one of its ‘pills.’
  2. With the real alethiometer, the operative needle (made of a special alloy), was under the control of the Dust, so the number of spins was not an issue—it simply spun as many times as it needed to, then stopped. Dust is not a factor here (that we know of), so you’re going to have to resort to dice to determine how many symbols you’re looking for before you have a complete sentence, and may stop. You may choose to roll only one die, but two or even three dice are reasonable. Four or five dice, then you’re looking for a paragraph, and the interpretation will get more difficult and possibly confusing. As always, ask the Spirit(s) of your choice as you’re shaking the dice to make the proper number of symbols known.
  3. When you have that number, place the chart before you, and ask the Spirit(s) of your choice to guide your chosen-tool to the right symbols. Then have at it.
  4. Write down the symbols as they occur. The order in which your spinner or pointer lands on the symbols is important to the composition of the message. Paper and pen or pencil will do, or use the special form I designed for notion & brain-storming.
  5. Now, it’s time to do the interpretation. This part may take the longest, for many different interpretations could be drawn, and you’ll likely have to rely heavily on your intuition for determining which meaning is the correct one. And then there is the possibility that there is both a surface-level meaning in response to your question, and a deeper one, and you’re going to have to determine if this is so in your case. The more specific, straightforward and less open-ended your question is, the easier this step will be.
