In the shadow of the standing donor is the small head of the mendicant woman’s child, seated beside her. Upright Meanings: generosity; giving without judgement; showing concern for the disadvantaged; giving someone the benefit of the doubt. Reversed Meanings: conservatism; parsimony; withholding resources; a concern that giving to the poor will only encourage their dependency. The sentiment, ‘They are in this sorry situation because of their own bad judgement.’ Saving one’s pennies for a rainy day. ‘Money is tight right now; I can’t afford to give.’
Nobody-a man whose head and arms sit directly on his legs. Nevertheless, he has a sword strapped around him, and a walking stick being held by his left hand. His torso is completely missing. He is pointing to his own scowling face. Upright Meanings: an average Joe; a person of no particular importance; the great mass of people who are neither the richest, the most powerful, the most intelligent, nor stand out in any way; the middle and working classes. A ‘nobody’ who prefers and enjoys anonymity. Reversed Meanings: a ‘nobody’ who resents that status; an ambitious person. A spy, a foreign asset, an informant, or a criminal who needs anonymity in order to effectively carry out their role. Reversed, this card could be a caution to the inquirer to beware of such a person. Someone they think is of no consequence and maybe even don’t notice, could turn out to play an important role. Or a person they think is harmless, could turn out not to be so—some of the worst monsters look like nobody in particular.
Oeconomy-a man wearing the fancy jerkin of a harlequin, walks alone down a country road. Over his left shoulder, he is carrying a stick, across which his matching trousers are draped. On closer inspection, he appears to be wearing hose which are patched on his upper right leg, just below the buttock. Upright Meanings: having to carefully administer one’s resources; prioritizing, economizing, scrimping and saving; saving the wear-and-tear on what little one has; one who has few possessions. Reversed Meanings: profligacy, waste; having little, but using it badly. Having more than enough and wasting it because you’re rich and you can. Someone who can’t or won’t economize. A bad economy.
Old Batchelor-a well-dressed eighteenth century gentleman of advanced years. He has a hat clutched under his right arm, appears he might be walking with a limp, and is resting his left wrist on a fine, tall cane. Upright Meanings: an older man who is either never-married, divorced or a widower. A good man of solid ethics, values, personal qualities and some degree of wisdom. He is probably fairly easy to get along with. Reversed Meanings: a man of advanced years who is not married; he could be a widower, a divorced man, or never-married. This could represent an older man who is either unpleasant to deal with, evil, or criminal (that could be why he’s an old bachelor).
Old Maid-ageism & misogyny alert: an elderly woman, with three dogs on leashes, is kneeling at the mouth of a cave before, and talking to, a devil from Hell. Flames roar up behind his back from the cave in which he is standing. The elderly woman, on closer inspection, has a hooked-nose, a pointed chin, and what could be described as an evil look on her face, the stereotypical facial features of a witch. This encounter is taking place in a remote area, with any signs of civilization far in the background. Upright Meanings: an elderly woman who is either never-married, divorced or widowed. This card upright means she is either unpleasant to deal with, evil, or criminal. A bad older woman whom the inquirer might want to avoid. A deal with the Devil. Evil done in secret. Reversed Meanings: an elderly woman who is either never-married, divorced or widowed. She is a good woman of good character and pleasant to deal with. She likely has accumulated wisdom which she puts to good use. Or, someone was offered ‘a deal with the Devil’, and refused it. Someone who successfully resisted temptation. Someone who looked before she leapt—and didn’t leap.
Palace-three hard-to-discern figures stand in a well-appointed room in an obviously-rich house. The stance of two of the figures suggest a ruler with an attendant behind them, while a third person gestures out the window toward a tower in the distance. Upright Meanings: a presidential/royal palace; the houses and properties of the rich; the upper class and their priorities. Any place where important decisions which affect a large number of people are made, so this could be legislative buildings or corporate headquarters of large, multi-national companies. Reversed Meanings: a head of state, an upper class or a rich and powerful company whose policies and priorities are at odds with the interests of the middle and working classes. Someone in a position of power at odds with their ‘lessers’.
Parson-a plump parson wearing a very-full wig under his hat and a pleasant expression on his face is looking toward the right of the picture. His hands are clasped in front of him. Upright Meanings: a clergyperson of any faith. A person who ‘has the calling’, and is considering or pursuing a course of religious study with the intent of becoming a clergyperson. A wise and kindly counselor of some sort. Someone who takes a godly and moral view of things. Someone for whom their religion is an important part of their life. Being a self-appointed conscience for everyone else. A clergyperson who has prospered in his chosen line of work. Reversed Meanings: A clergyperson or a seemingly-devout lay-person who is outwardly good, but harbors ugliness within. Someone who doesn’t live what they preach (in colloquial parlance, they don’t ‘walk their talk’). One who uses religion for ulterior or selfish motives. Someone who uses religion as a stick to beat others with. A clergyperson who has used their religious status to enrich themselves. A counselor with Issues.
