Scan_20190807 (27)Honour-a Roman officer, possibly the same one we saw in the Fortitude card, is standing on a pier. There are ships behind him with their sails up, a boatman in a smaller ferry-boat behind him, and artillery on the pier around him, so it looks like he is getting ready to depart soon. He is wearing a headband of some sort, there is what appears to be a crown of leaves in the shadow at the bottom of the picture, and an eagle hovers in the sky to the left of the ships’ sails. The Roman soldier is looking resolutely to the right, and gesturing with a stick. Upright Meanings: honor, integrity; doing not what one wants, but what one feels impelled to do because one’s sense of ethics, justice, or societal obligations demands it. Going away because honor demands it. Reversed Meanings: dishonor; disgrace; losing face; returning in shame, or leaving in shame; someone for whom honor means little or nothing at all; the losses which come with the loss of honor; going into exile of some sort, because of lost honor.

Hope-a bare-foot man, possibly a poor sailor, is leaning on a huge anchor and stares off to the right of the picture. Behind him, on very rough seas, one ship is sinking and a second ship is danger of sinking. Upright Meanings: hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Rumination. Refusing to see reality. Imagining what one would prefer to have happen, rather than facing what is. Reversed Meanings: Hopelessness. Things are so bad, even fantasy doesn’t help. Having to stop living on dreams and actively work at making things better. Being forced to leave the world of fantasy in order to deal with reality.

Upright Meanings: work; using one’s time profitably; being active, not idle; changing raw materials from nature into something useful to humankind, and all industries which do this; being kept busy, for ‘an idle mind is the Devil’s playground’ –sort of thinking. Reversed Meanings: plants, factories, or businesses idled; lack of productive output; laziness; sloughing-off; nothing’s happening; industries or captains of industry who do not work for the benefit of the world’s peoples, but for themselves—companies or executives lacking a social conscience. An industry which actually does harm, rather than good.
