These are just ideas to get your feet wet about meanings, but the key thing to ask yourself when you look at your ‘grab’ is, ‘what do I associate with this symbol?’ It could be that only one meaning of that symbol applies to your year ahead, or all of them could apply. This is why I think it’s a good idea to have enough cookies for everyone to go for a second or even third round of ‘lucky grabs.’ The second and third cookies you grab could shed some light on the first.
Option Two
Don’t feel like doing all that baking? Don’t have all the ingredients on hand anyway? Its summertime where you live and it’s too hot to bake? You can still try your hand at glucksgreife! Assemble a variety of cookie cutters on the largest tray you have in the house, or even on a table, then cover them with a towel, a small-but thick blanket, or a quilt (you don’t want participants to be able to readily guess which cookie cutter is which, so a thick cover is important). Proceed as you would with actual cookies under the cover, only everyone grabs a cookie cutter. A variation on this approach is, you could toss the cookie cutters into an opaque bowl or large pot, cover it with a towel, then have everyone reach under the cover and root around blind for a cookie cutter, but tell ‘em to mind the sharp edges.
The advantage of this approach is ease and convenience. You can divine in as much time as it takes to assemble the cookie cutters and cover them with something that’ll effectively hide their identities. A fun follow-up to this approach would be to have some cookie dough on hand, either homemade or store-bought, then roll it out on a cutting board and have participants press-cut and decorate their cookies. The cookies would then be baked and eaten, but keep in mind: to consume the cookie you chose is to symbolically accept the fortune it represents. Also, not every cookie-shape has a good meaning. Some people may want to decline to turn their cookie cutter into an actual cookie and that feeling should be respected.
