How to Perform this Divination

Sit, set up the candles in the form of a triangle, light them, and clear your mind. Start by realizing the candle flames before you are but a smaller form of a much larger flame, the life-giving energies of the Sun, which shines on everything. The Light knows all, because it sees all. Focus on the flames and let their warmth fill your spirit. Ask the Light to protect you as you perform this divination. Close your eyes and compose your first question. Open your eyes and ask your question aloud, staring at the candles, but letting your focus go a few inches beyond them. The candle flames’ behavior in response is held to have the following meanings:

• One candle flame burning higher than the other two is a positive response to your question. You won’t have to do much of anything to get the result you desire.
• The candle flames rising and falling consistently means caution. It’s a delicate situation and things probably won’t go as smoothly as you would like. You will have to pick your way carefully through the terrain, knowing when to act and when not to act.
• An uneven flame simply means danger. Proceed with caution.
• A candle flame which throws off sparks also advises caution.
• Back-and-forth flame movements (toward you and away from you) indicate the situation surrounding your question or issue is about to change rapidly, so await further developments before taking action.
• Side-to-side flame movements is an indication a travel opportunity or journey is in your near future; possibly in connection with the question or issue you have asked about.
• A flame curling or looping at the tip is an indication someone is talking about you.
• A twisting, spiraling flame means beware of hidden problems or pitfalls. Someone could be plotting against you.
• A ‘blinking’ or sputtering flame is plea to relax, take a break, and be patient. This is not a situation or time where you can hasten the outcome, or even make your influence felt. As the saying goes, ‘Let go and let God.’
• One candle flame abruptly going out in response to your question is an omen of bad luck, and it’s even worse if two or all three go out suddenly in response to your question. This means the resolution of your question or issue is going to be difficult at best and it will likely not resolve itself in a way you like. This interpretation of course assumes that the candle(s) haven’t reached the end of their useful life when you asked the question to which they gave this response.
• Accidentally tipping over a candle (I recommend using tea candles on an insulated, non-skid surface; you eliminate the danger of burning down the house this way) is an omen of a wedding or partnership to come.
• A predominance of blue in the flames indicates either a frost is coming and/or you being paid a visit from a ‘non-local energy’ i.e., a spirit. If that’s the case, and if you feel you can trust this spirit, you may want to ask the spirit if you can ask it some questions. A suddenly higher-burning flame means yes. Then ask away.
• If the flames do nothing but flicker occasionally, it means you can rest easy about the outcome of your issue, as everything will work out in your best interests.
• Not being able to light one or more of the candles means a storm, literal or figurative, will soon blow over, so just sit tight and wait for it to end.
