THE ‘HOW’
In Gematria, it is the name of a person, place or thing which is important. Birthdates or foundation dates are simply not considered. The name is reduced to a compound number, called simply the Name Number. It’s possible to have a single digit Name Number in Gematria, but highly unlikely. Some compound numbers in Gematria have specific meanings, as you’ll see from the Table of Interpretations. Others, you’ll have to break down the meaning by place value, and each place value number will have a separate prophecy or fortune attached to it. All of them combine to comprise the subject’s collective fortune.
The secondary number, derived from the Name Number, is the Potency Number. The Potency Number reflects the underlying strength or energy at work below the surface of the Name Number. It can reflect how the subject is actually manifesting the energy of the name number in the world.
EXAMPLE ONE
My own name, Euphonia Carstairs, in Gematria, adds up to 827. The operative numbers for interpretation in my case are 800, 20, and 7. 800 is ‘the number of conquest and empire, and ruled by Jupiter. This number might well lead its holder to the summit of the world.’ 20 is ‘the number of creation. This person will win their dreams by their talents, which are exceptional. They may even possess occult powers.’ 7 is ‘An above-average talent is possessed by this person, but these talents will be recognized only after great effort. Eventually, however, fame, fortune and freedom from want will be theirs.’
Now it’s time to bring the Potency Number into the equation. There are two ways of arriving at the Potency Number. Method Number One is, you add the numbers of the Name Number. Thus, 8+2+7=17. 17 is ‘This person has talent, but without an apparent purpose. If they can gain or find that purpose, success will be theirs.’
Method Number Two for arriving at the Potency Number requires dividing the Name Number by the subject’s age, then taking the remainder for the Potency Number. Dividing my Name Number by my current age left me with a remainder of 33. In the Table of Interpretations, 33 is ‘The number of purity and grace. Giving pleasure to others provides this person with their greatest happiness.’ Which fairly accurately reflects part of my state of mind at this point in my life. This leads me to believe that Method Number Two of arriving at the Potency Number can be treated as a ‘progress report’ or ‘current energy reading’ of sorts, since the Potency Number calculated by division will change with the subject’s age.
So what is the overall picture presented by the Name Number and the Potency Number? It appears to suggest a talented person, but one who didn’t start out in life knowing exactly where she wanted to take her talents. But once settled on a purpose (designing a divination curriculum), I was off and running. The 800 place-number suggests it’s not a small task I’ve set myself, the 20 indicates the creativity I bring to the task, and the 7 indicates it’ll take great effort on my part and many years before I can come anywhere close to declaring success. I’d say this summation of me is a direct hit, although I don’t profess to being a world-beater or possessing any occult powers.
EXAMPLE TWO
I chose the number 1585 at random to see what this number could tell me about any person who would chance to have this Gematrian Name Number. The 1000 indicates a long and useful life. 500 indicates a person with great self-control, who can resist many temptations. It also indicates they may have to stand alone at some point in their life and risk losing money, friends and heritage before winning success and a great, lasting love. 80 indicates they will narrowly avoid a violent death early-on in life, but once they dodge that, good fortune will be theirs. 5 indicates they will know a life of pleasure and happiness, and a happy marriage is destined for them. A life with its share of blessings and challenges so far.
A little less positively, the Potency Number derived from the sum of the Name Number digits is 19, which is the number of folly. This person will have three really great opportunities in life, and the danger is that they may let two of these great opportunities pass before they realize what great opportunities they were. They can manage to snag the third, if they listen to the wise advice of a loved one. This person will really have to be on the ball if they want to snag all three. Generally, a life of long-term success and happiness, after facing some stiff challenges early-on.
