PREPARING TO READ THE PIQUET DECK

I gather that in some parts of Europe, it is possible to purchase a Piquet deck. In the U.S., a specifically-Piquet deck is rather harder to come by, so you may have to buy a regular playing card deck and remove certain cards from it. The cards from the normal playing card deck which are retained in Piquet are the Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks (or Knaves), 10s, 9s, 8s, and 7s. All cards 2 through 6 in each suit, plus the Joker, are removed.  

Of course, you could also press a regular playing card deck into service for this, then bring the whole deck back together when you’re done. Piquet is another one of those divination methods which can conveniently masquerade as a normal, everyday game like dice or dominos. You can divine with a playing-card deck in the afternoon, using just the Piquet-part of the deck, and still play poker with the whole deck that evening.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF PIQUET DIVINATION

There are certain general principles to keep in mind when reading with the Piquet deck:

  • Many diamond cards in a reading indicate money-matters are upper-most in the inquirer’s mind.
  • Many hearts show that love affairs, friendships, and all matters of the hearts are upper-most in the inquirer’s mind.
  • Many clubs indicate that work and business matters predominate in the inquirer’s concerns.
  • Many spades indicate that fate, trouble, disagreements, or things which cannot be avoided are very-much in the picture for the inquirer.
  • Court cards stand for people.
  • Queens represent all women of every age.
  • Kings represent a mature or elderly man.
  • Jacks are considered to represent young men.
  • Some Piquet-diviners consider the king to represent men in general, and Jacks(or Knaves) represent the thoughts or intentions of the corresponding king.

When using either of the card-reading methods discussed below, keep the principles above in mind. Remember to scan the cards, either at the beginning or the end of the reading, to determine if any particular suits, court cards, or pip cards predominate, since such details can color the reading and give you the flavor of the issue at-hand.
