Paper fortune tellers, or ‘cootie catchers’ are one of the most readily-available divination tools available on the Internet, in quite a variety of themes. A casual search of Google Images should bring you quite a sampling of them. I’ve even seen whole published books of tear-out-and-use paper fortune tellers, so if you don’t feel like creating one from scratch, there are a lot of people out there who have done the hard work for you. What paper fortune tellers lack in depth of insight, they make up for in their ease of creation, and great breadth of potential subject matter.
It’s the sort of divination tool which could be good to have in your pocket when you need to make an on-the-spot decision and you’re feeling indecisive. Of course the drawback, or possibly an additional strong-point to this form of divination, is it makes you feel like a child. What adult wants to be seen pulling a cootie-catcher out of their pocket? This form of divination practically demands a user with a sense of humor, and who can take the inevitable ribbing, certainly. But if that doesn’t bother you, it may be time to take another look at the paper fortune teller/cootie-catcher as a useful divination tool.
EXERCISES:
- Print out and use the general ‘colors’ paper fortune teller above. Ask it your choice of subjects. You could ask it about the immediate future for yourself and three people you know. Note the answers you receive for each question, then return to them at the end of the week. Did they come true?
- Find, download, print out and use a paper fortune teller from the Internet. A Google Images search should bring up a nice variety of them. Or, you can use one of the other two paper fortune tellers posted above. If you can find one designed to focus on a specific issue, so much the better. Ask about both yourself and at least two other people you know. Note the answers you receive for each and answer just one question–were the answers true?
- Now that you’ve used two of them, answer the following questions: Were they of any use at all, or were they merely a moment’s amusement? Under what circumstances would you use them? What is the paper fortune teller’s strong points as a divination tool? What are it’s weak points?

Haven’t seen these since the 70s! Had a lot of fun! Downloaded the PDF. Going to have one sitting on my kitchen counter to play with once in awhile.
Glad you’re enjoying this blast from the past! It’s when we’re relaxed and having fun that true answers can come through clearly.
