
In this year of Covid-19, when get-togethers and popular gatherings of all kinds are discouraged, I wanted to come up with something new and different to keep you entertained on Halloween. Last year, it was the divinatory properties of Barmbrack, an Irish custom, which is supposed to give all who partake an idea of what is ahead for them in the coming year. But Halloween, I think, has two main purposes: divining the future and communing with the dead. The Veil is considered to be thin at this time of year, making communication with the dead more easy. My personal tradition is to hold a silent supper in honor of the dead every Halloween.
For those who don’t want to go that route in order to commemorate Halloween and can’t go out because Coronavirus, I’ve created what I call ‘The Polyhedrons of the Dead.’ These consist of one cube, one icosahedron, and six dodecahedrons. You can use them on their own, or you can use them in conjunction with the game-board I’ve devised for the purpose. From what I’ve read about peoples’ communications with the dead over the years, it seems to me that most of what the dead would have to say to us could be condensed to a relatively-small set of messages.
