The Lots consist of a set of stones or discs with the letters of the alphabet painted, engraved, stenciled, stamped, or stickered on them. TheIsraeli Pagan’s set had the letters of the Hebrew alphabet on them,which is traditional, since this comes to us from the ancient Israelites. Here’s the secret, though–so long as you know the language of the alphabet you’re using, this divination method will work for you. You can use the Western alphabet, Cyrillic, Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs or any other alphabet system you choose. My set of Lots are glass ‘stones’ with adhesive alphabet labels stuck on them, and kept in a black cloth-lined basket, all of which I purchased at a local craft-supply store. In a pinch, though, you could even use a set of Scrabble(tm) letters!
My set has the numbers 0 through 9, and punctuation marks included, but you can just stick with letters if you like. I also like to have more than one stone with each letter of the alphabet and more than one of each number, so the Lots can spell out messages more clearly and extensively, but again, you may want to go with just one of each, and that appears to be the traditional approach. The lots can be kept in a bowl, a basket or a bag, just so long as your hand will fit comfortably into whatever receptacle you keep them, and will let you stir up the Lots as you invoke protection and ask for true answers to your questions.
HOW TO CAST THE LOTS
Using the Lots is very simple. Sit with your set of Lots by your less-dominant hand and start stirring them up with your less-dominant hand, while you ask whatever Higher Power/Spirit/Ancestor/Your Own Higher Self you care to invoke to bless, guide and protect you as you seek answers through the Lots. Ask your first question out loud, then when you feel you have stirred up the Lots sufficiently, grab a handful of them and cast them on the table in front of you. You may want to invest in or make a casting cloth for your Lots as well.
If any of the Lots are face down, turn them over, then start playing around with the Lots to see if they spell out any words, acronyms, or initials. Are there enough Lots to form a phrase, or even a sentence? This is the most challenging thing about the Lots, to use both your intuition and your knowledge of words in order to make sense of the Lots you’ve cast. Casting Lots is a divination method tailor-made for the Scrabble player. Important Point: not all the letters (or numbers) are going to be employed in your answer. You are looking for the letter/numbers which most make sense in terms of an answer to your question. Some letters or numbers just aren’t going to be a part of your answer. These you can cast aside. Another thing which can happen is that the Lots you draw can be used to spell more than one word, and you may have to take this into consideration as an answer. The situation may resolve itself first with one of the words, then turn into the other! Sometimes the answer you get to a question will be merely a hint.
